The girls of the Central York Girls Hockey Association are looking to “crush” it again.

The association’s Orange Crush team last year set a goal of raising $20,000 to install outdoor SaveStations defibrillators in Newmarket and Aurora.

The 11- to 13-year-old girls from Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury were inspired to fund the life-saving stations after then-17-year-old Newmarket resident, Raychel Gilles, used an automatic external defibrillator to save the life of goalie George Padanyi at her dad’s shinny game at the Sharon Arena on Sept. 15, 2019.

Thanks to the efforts of the Orange Crush team, SaveStations were installed at Riverwalk Commons in Newmarket and at the Aurora Town Park.

Now the team is taking part in a new league-wide fundraiser to boost the number of AEDs in the community, said training instructor Trish Murphy.

“Not all saves happen on the ice,” she said, adding the challenge is also a way to bring the hockey community together for a common goal during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hockey association is partnering with HockeyShare, HockeyShot and SaveStation in an interactive, league-wide campaign called “She Shoots, She Saves” running from March 13 to 27…
