The TDWBIA is excited to announce the debut of Toronto’s inaugural outdoor SaveStation at the CN Tower. Situated in the bustling Entertainment District, which attracts over 19 million visitors annually, this initiative brings a crucial lifesaving resource to the heart of the city. Nestled at the foot of the CN Tower, the installation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) ensures 24/7 public accessibility during emergencies. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including the Zoll AED 3, the Outdoor SaveStation guarantees readiness for rescue at all times, with climate control ensuring optimal functionality year-round. Moreover, integrated security features such as a built-in camera capturing images upon cabinet access and an emergency alarm system further enhance safety measures.

First Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik stated, “This initiative demonstrates the BIA’s continued commitment to public safety and community partnerships. We appreciate the collaboration between the TDWBIA, CN Tower, and Action First Aid in finding proactive measures that safeguard the wellbeing of Torontonians and visitors”.

Cardiac arrest can strike unexpectedly, with every passing moment crucial for survival. As per the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, each minute of delay in defibrillation lowers the chance of survival by 10%. Annually, over 60,000 Canadians experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, yet only approximately 10% survive. Research indicates that swift application of an AED alongside CPR can boost survival odds by 75% or more. Sadly, accessible AEDs remain scarce far too often.

“The TDWBIA has played a key role in recognizing and addressing the need for publicly accessible AEDs,” commented Deb Hennig, President of Action First Aid. “Providing 24/7 access to a life-saving AED is critical as every second counts when sudden cardiac arrest strikes. Access to an AED under 4 minutes is the goal. We are celebrating the placement at the base of the CN Tower given the millions of people that visit this area annually”.

The surge in development projects, infrastructure upgrades, and road closures, coupled with a growing population in the region, poses challenges for Emergency Medical Services. Mike Josifovic, TDWBIA’s Director of Safety & Security remarked,

“We have developed strategies with a number of community stakeholders that aim to foster a safe environment. SaveStations support City services in protecting the public in this 24/7 neighbourhood”.
