The University of Guelph has expanded its campus cardiac safety program with the installation of two outdoor SaveStation AED cabinets at Varsity Field and the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The climate-controlled, publicly accessible AED stations provide 24/7 access to life-saving equipment for students, staff, athletes, and visitors during sudden cardiac emergencies.

The initiative was led by the Department of Athletics following a 2024 incident in which a Gryphon men’s volleyball player survived sudden cardiac arrest during practice thanks to immediate CPR and rapid AED use.

“Expanding access to AEDs in our outdoor spaces is a meaningful step toward a safer, more prepared campus community.”

— Sarah Mau, Interim Director of Athletics

The project brought together Athletics, Physical Resources, and the Campus Safety Office to strengthen emergency preparedness across the university’s outdoor recreation spaces.

The SaveStation cabinets are heated, ventilated, alarmed, and monitored year-round to ensure the AEDs remain rescue-ready in all weather conditions.

“If there’s a cardiac emergency, call 911, start CPR, and send someone to retrieve an AED. These three steps can make all the difference.”

— Deb Hennig, President, Action First Aid

University officials say the installations are part of a broader commitment to improving public safety infrastructure and increasing awareness around cardiac emergency response.
