Enhancing Security for Outdoor AEDs
Balancing Access and Risk
Although theft and vandalism are common concerns, real-world data shows they are rarely an issue when placing AEDs outdoors. Decades of experience in Europe—and growing data from the U.S. and Canada—show that public access AEDs are widely respected, much like fire extinguishers. Research shows no difference in theft rates between locked and unlocked cabinets.
To date SaveStation has sold over 1,300 units (indoor and outdoor) and we have been made aware of 5 instances of theft. At all locations, theft occurred in areas that were identified to be previously problematic.
Enhancing Security for Outdoor AEDs
To further minimize risk and enhance security, we recommend the following:
- Install in well-lit, high-visibility areas: ideally choose locations that already have security cameras.
- Use clear signage: indicate that the AED is under 24/7 monitoring to deter tampering or theft.
- Select a monitored SaveStation® cabinet (SSVHM series):
- Takes a photo when the cabinet or AED is accessed
- Sends instant alerts (via email/SMS) to designated AED caretakers
- Remotely monitors AED readiness and alerts caretakers to any issues
- Choose an alarmed cabinet: activates a loud sound when opened to deter theft and signal that help is needed.
- Run public awareness campaigns: reinforce the life-saving importance of AEDs and their role in emergency response.
- Ask your SaveStation distributor if they offer an insurance plan to protect against theft.
Balancing Access and Risk
The life-saving benefits of having AEDs available 24/7 far outweigh any minimal risk of theft. However, in high-risk areas, a locked cabinet can be considered.
SaveStation® does not advocate for locked cabinets but does offer this as a solution if required.
