Outdoor SaveStations Provide 24/7 Cardiac Safety in High-Traffic Areas
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – All thanks to an idea from UW-Madison students, there are two new automated external defibrillator (AED) SaveStations downtown at the Library Mall and James Madison Park.

“Students who are out and about going to the Union or in the Library Mall area, they’re not getting access [to AEDs inside buildings],” said Kelsey King, co-president of Cardiac on Campus. ”So we were like, the perfect thing would be to move outdoor access here and in James Madison Park, a high traffic area for students.”

Cardiac on Campus is a fully student-run nonprofit working to prevent cardiac arrest on the UW-Madison campus. They pitched the idea for the outdoor AEDs in early 2024 and collaborated with the City of Madison and the fire department to make it a reality.
When cardiac arrest happens, seconds matter.
“Your chance of survival if you’re in a shockable rhythm is significantly increased in the first four minutes of someone going into cardiac arrest, said Chris Hammes, Assistant Chief at the Madison Fire Department. ”Having these devices or any public access AED in a location where someone can grab it and apply that therapy to an individual who went into cardiac arrest makes an immeasurable difference in their outcome potential.”
The SaveStation AED is easy to use, even if you don’t have any previous CPR or AED training.
